Dr. Peggy Lindsey Owens was elected Connectional First Vice President of the Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society at the 30th Quadrennial Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Thursday, July 27, 2023.
One of Rev. Dr. Peggy Owens’s favorite scripture is “Being confident of this very thing, that he who has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ ” Philippians 1:6, she is committed to the work of Christ. She has served in different capacities in the A.M.E. Zion Church for over 30 years. She shares with others that her “Mom trained her to be a missionary.” She currently serves as the Administrative Assistant to Mrs. Sheila W. Monroe, Missionary Supervisor of Eastern North Carolina Episcopal District, District President of the Laurinburg District Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society- Central North Carolina Conference, President of the – Minister’s Spouses and Widower Fellowship-Central North Carolina Conference and Member of the Central North Carolina Conference Task Force on Transition Missions and Ministry Team.
Dr. Owens has served as the Coordinator of the Young Adult Missionary (YAMS) on both the local and the district levels. Her service as District YAMS Coordinator spanned over 16 years both on the Edenton District-Albemarle Conference and the Laurinburg District-Central North Carolina Conference. She has also served as the Episcopal Health Coordinator for the Eastern North Carolina Episcopal District. Dr. Owens is consecrated a deaconess. Dr. Owens is actively engaged in community service in her community.
Dr. Owens preached her trial sermon in October 2002 at the Freedom Chapel. A.M.E. Zion Church (Raeford). She was ordained a deacon January 22, 2011, and she is currently an elected elder (2012) in A.M.E. Zion Church.
Dr. Owens has 20+ years of progressive educational leadership as the Executive Director of Student Support Services for Hoke County Schools. She is responsible for administering learning support programs for Pre-k-13 students, supervising staff, strategic planning, executing programs, managing budgets, and implementing new initiatives based on state and federal policies such McKinney-Vento Program (homeless education), foster care, school mental health program, social, emotional learning, Health Services, School counseling, school social work and health education programs.
Dr. Owens is a graduate of the University of Central Arkansas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Community Health Education and a master’s degree in School Health Education. She has done additional studies at Hood Theological Seminary and East Carolina University. She completed her School Administration license at UNC Chapel Hill. She earned the Doctor of Education Degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in December 2017. Dr. Owens is also a 2019 Educational Policy Fellows Graduate from the North Carolina Public School Forum Program. In August 2022, she received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award from Governor Roy Cooper. She also received the 2023 Hoke County Public Health Award for her work with the COVID-19 Pandemic and other health initiatives that improved the health of students and adults in Hoke County, North Carolina.
She is married to Rev. Ray P. Owens, Sr., and they have three wonderful young adult children: Ray Jr., Phillip, and Lindse’. She is also the grandmother of Phillip Jr. (PJ) and Langston. Dr. Owens is a member of the Freedom Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Raeford, North Carolina. Peggy Lindsey Owens is the daughter of the (late) Rev. Roosevelt Lindsey, Sr. and the (late) Mrs. Inez Lindsey. She is a native of Monticello, Arkansas.
