Mrs. Shirley M. McCoy, served for 8 years as Missionary Supervisor in the Alabama/Florida Episcopal District and 4 years in the Eastern North Carolina Episcopal District, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Mrs. McCoy received her BS degree in Psychology and a Master of Social Work from Howard University. After 37 years with the federal government, she retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs, New York Harbor Healthcare System as Program Director for the Home-Based Primary Care Department.

For twenty-two (22) years she served with her husband, Bishop James McCoy, at First A.M.E. Zion Church in Brooklyn, New York. While there, she was the local president of the Augusta Latham Parent Body #2 Missionary Society. She also served as the Brooklyn District, New York Conference, affiliate representative, the National Council of Negro Women and as Secretary, Bureau of Supply, Brooklyn District, New York Conference. She holds the distinction of serving, for three years, as the first District president of the New York City District, New York Conference, Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society.

In 1995 and 2003 she was a workshop presenter at the Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society’s Quadrennial Conventions; host missionary supervisor for the 125th W.H.&O.M.S. Anniversary Celebration (2005) held in Montgomery, Alabama; host missionary supervisor for the 2007 W.H.& O.M.S. Quadrennial Convention in Orlando, Florida and past workshop presenter/convener at numerous church, and community events.

In 2016, Mrs. McCoy officially retired as Missionary Supervisor after continuing to serve in this capacity following the passing of her husband, Bishop James E. McCoy (2012). Due to unforeseen circumstances in 2019 (Piedmont Episcopal District) & 2023 (Alabama-Florida Episcopal District), she led the delegations for the W.H.& O.M. Society’s 29th & 30th General Conventions, respectively.
