The Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society is the oldest and largest organization of The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. In 1880, the Society was formed in response to an overseas church-planting venture by the denomination. More than 130 years later, the Society is involved in the diverse cultures of West, Central and South Africa, England, India, Guyana, Surinam and the Caribbean island, with its flagship overseas mission church started in 1878 in Brewerville, Liberia West Africa.

The purpose of the Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society of The African Methodist Zion Church is to:

• Promote growth in the knowledge and understanding of God and His plan of redemption for the world, as revealed through Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit;
• Teach the concepts of Christian missions and provide experiences for participation in mission work and its ministries;
• Exemplify the principles of Christian living and to win others to Christ;
• Promote the cause of World Evangelism; and
• Serve as a financial support system to undergird the world mission outreach of The A.M.E. Zion Church at home and overseas, to the end that, through the power of the Holy Spirit, Christ is exalted and God is glorified.

The Executive Board consists of 23 members that serves as the Executive Committee. This Board is led by an international president, with the assistance of a first and second vice president, treasurer, recording secretary, director of communications, twelve missionary supervisors each appointed by the Bishop of an Episcopal District, and six departments that form an intergenerational bridge for mission participation, from pre-schoolers to senior adults. These Christian churchwomen seek excellence in the LORD as they look beyond traditional methods of service to create innovative approaches for kingdom building nationally and internationally.

The Executive Board, by its Constitution, has the authority to make rules and regulations governing the Society consistent with those specified in the Book of Discipline of The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. It also has the power to fill vacancies of elected officers during the interim of the Quadrennial Convention. The Executive Board does not have the authority to make constitutional changes.

Our work is executed and carried out by our many missionary sisters and brothers across the world who are lifting the banner of Zion as they perform their duties as spelled out in the Constitution. These ministries are on the Local Church, District and Conference level with guidance and direction from the Executive Board.
